On January 31, 2025, the Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia (SCNL) extended its support to the Disabled Association of Nimba, in Sanniquellie, Nimba County. The donation, which was part of SCNL’s Fiscal Year 2024 retreat held in Ganta from January 26 to 31, was aimed at assisting individuals in the disabled community and strengthening community ties.

The donated items included essential goods such as rice, bleach (Clorox), and other necessities. Madam Yuconjay Barchure, who led the SCNL delegation, highlighted the importance of incorporating the disabled into every initiative and project. In her remarks, she stressed that the inclusion of all community members, regardless of their abilities, is a fundamental aspect of SCNL’s vision for a more inclusive society.

Mr. D. Abestine Tozay, President of the Nimba Disabled Community, expressed gratitude on behalf of the disabled community. He thanked SCNL for the timely donation, but also emphasized the need for long-term empowerment rather than solely relying on donations. His remarks underscored the desire for sustainable development that would provide opportunities for independence and growth within the disabled community.

Before the donation ceremony, SCNL’s team met with the mayor of Sanniquellie to discuss potential partnerships that would benefit both the community and its people. Mr. Michael E. Taire, SCNL’s Program Manager, led the discussions and emphasized the importance of conservation efforts as part of community development. The partnership would explore opportunities to integrate conservation initiatives with local development goals, ensuring a balanced approach to environmental and social progress.

As part of its community engagement efforts, SCNL also organized a friendly football and kickball match with the Telleh EcoBrigade. The event provided a fun and interactive platform for community members to come together and promote teamwork, fostering stronger relationships between SCNL and the local community.

SCNL’s ongoing efforts highlight its commitment not only to conservation but also to the empowerment and inclusion of all community members, including those with disabilities. Through these actions, SCNL is contributing to building a more inclusive, supportive, and sustainable future for Liberia.
