On November 8, 2024, the Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia (SCNL) organized an engaging and educational biodiversity conservation awareness meeting with students from the African Methodist Episcopal University (AMEU). This gathering provided an invaluable opportunity for the next generation of environmental leaders to deepen their understanding of conservation efforts in Liberia and to learn more about SCNL’s ongoing initiatives in biodiversity preservation.
A Passionate Group of Emerging Environmentalists
The students who participated in the meeting came with a strong desire to explore environmental conservation work in their future careers. With increasing interest in sustainability and environmental protection, these young individuals are eager to make a difference. They saw the meeting as a chance to learn directly from SCNL, an organization that has been at the forefront of conserving Liberia’s rich biodiversity since 1986.
During the meeting, students were encouraged to ask questions and engage in meaningful conversations about the challenges and opportunities related to environmental conservation. They explored various topics, from the importance of protecting Liberia’s natural resources to the impact of human activity on biodiversity. The opportunity to connect with experienced conservationists and gain insight into the work of SCNL was an inspiring moment for all involved.
A Platform for Knowledge Sharing
The meeting was not only about providing information, but also about creating a space where students could actively participate and exchange ideas. SCNL’s team shared detailed insights into the organization’s ongoing and past projects, shedding light on the important conservation work being carried out across Liberia. Through this interactive session, students gained a deeper appreciation for the challenges facing Liberia’s biodiversity and the efforts being made to protect it.
The highlight of the meeting was a lively Q&A session where students had the chance to ask questions and provide feedback. Those who participated actively were rewarded with SCNL flyers and awareness bands, which serve as a reminder of the importance of biodiversity conservation.
Acknowledging the Team Behind the Event
This successful awareness session was facilitated by Johnson G. Koikoi, SCNL’s Environmental Education Officer, whose passion for environmental education guided the conversation and encouraged students to think critically about conservation issues. The event was also supported by James P. Mulbah, SCNL’s Landscape Management Officer, Charlene Jallah, FOLUR Project Coordinator, and Janet Urey Mulbah, SCNL Membership Officer, who all contributed their expertise and time to make the meeting a success.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Environmental Conservation
As the students from AMEU continue their educational journeys, they leave the meeting with a deeper understanding of biodiversity conservation and the vital role they can play in protecting Liberia’s natural heritage. SCNL is committed to fostering the next generation of environmental leaders, and events like this one help to inspire and equip young people with the knowledge and tools they need to advocate for sustainable practices in their communities.
SCNL will continue to work alongside schools, universities, and local communities to raise awareness about environmental issues, promote conservation efforts, and inspire future environmentalists. With the passion and drive demonstrated by the students at this meeting, the future of Liberia’s biodiversity conservation looks bright.
